Black Friday: In theory and In Practice

As always Black Friday is exciting beforehand, with so many sweet deals and such. But when it comes down to it, do you really want to get out of hibernation at 5am? I did not. I did not even set the alarm cock. Do you really want to wake up at 7am? Nope! I was out the door at 10am, and I avoided most of the electronics superstores. It looked like a big kerfuffle around them. So instead I went to smaller, less crowded hotspots like Longs (Fuji 25pk DVD $5AR), Radio Shack (nothing really exciting there), and Walgreens (fun!). By the way if you are the handsing guy from Longs and you are reading this, send me an email ;-) And most of the stuff I bought was grocery or household consumables. And 20 pints of Haagen Danz 2 for $1.50 with coupon at Walgreens ;-)

Sneazy visits Kohls for the first time

All apologies we do not have any pictures of this historic event. But we have visited Kohl's for the first time this week. Overall we rate it B+ as it has reasonably priced items and in general has lower prices and more selection than Mervyn's and the other mid-range retailers.

Factor Rating: B+

Note: "we" is not "royal we", it is "voices in my head and me" we :-)

Funny Circuit City pricing error

Black Friday is approaching

Thanks to Mark O. for providing this link: http://www.blackfridayads.com/. Make sure you plan ahead and map your destinations. Planning ahead is paramount to a successful Black Friday hunting trip. Make sure you avoid caffeine and sugary sodas so you don't start a fight or go into "shopper rage" or "road rage".

Attention Amazon shoppers!

Amazon is offering free-trials to "Amazon Prime", an annual membership program that entitles you to free 2-day shipping for ALL items regardless of price, or $3.99 for 1-day delivery. The annual fee for this is $79 or so. You can conviniently cancel the free trial by the way, but Amazon is betting that once you get spoiled with near instant delivery, you won't be able to give it up :-)

Mini review: Science fiction on Network TV

The 2nd half of the new seasons of Galactica and the Stargates does not start until the middle of January 2006. So fans of scifi may be interested in the new wave of network TV scifi. This is a mini review of science fiction shows on network TV:

  • Surface: This is essentially two shows in one. The first part is teenager adopts strange/scary/alien pet. The 2nd part is a rogue female scientist, conspiracy theories and cover-ups and such.

  • Threshold:
  • Alien things "land" in the sea. A team of geniuses is assembled to investigate. Does the plot sound familiar?

  • Invasion:
  • Alien things "land" in the Everglades. Curious residents want to investigate. Some locals may be under the influence/control of the aliens. This show screams "V" remake. (you know, V, V The Final Battle). In fact the sheriff looks a lot like the reporter from "V" - he even has that semi-annoying voice. When the show is not busy with aliens/mysteries, it deals with blended families and multiple divorces.

  • Supernatural:
  • X-Files but with two 20-somethings. Oh yeah, it is on WB. Supernatural elements are liberally used here and presented as fact.

  • Nightstalker:
  • This is a remake of the old Kolchak but it also looks like "X-Files Lite". Supernatural elements here remain a mystery most of the time.

The common thread among all of the above: They have exceeded expectations, but the expectations were very low to begin with...

    Audi's secretly gay ad

If you pay close attention to one of the new Audi TV commercials you will hear this message: "The world is not straight".

    South Park does it again!

Nine years later, and South Park still manages to squeeze another edgy episode with "Ginger kids" - as seen on TV last week.

43% of first time marriages end in divorce...

According to the Census, 43% of first time marriages end up in divorce or separation in the first fifteen years. Given that, it is rather curious that a number of religious freakazoids are wasting millions of dollars to prevent same-sex marriage, when the marriage is really a joke!

    Yahoo email adds text verification

In an attempt to fight spam Yahoo email has now added selective text verification when you are sending an email message. Now if that works at cutting down spam significantly, then it is worth is. Otherwise it's just a big kerfuffle!

    Numbers: 11:11 on 11/11

Two very special moments happen today: 11:11am and 11:11pm on 11/11! Needless to say this happens only twice a year.

It will be even more special in 2011... :-)

    The Gay Divide

Tuesday's election has shown that the Gay Divide is growing among red and blue states.

The rednecks and religious fanatics in Texas (75% of them) added bigotry and discrimination to their state's constitution by banning same-sex marriage. Well done rednecks. Next perhaps you should amend the constitution so you can marry your sisters, mothers and daughters. The 21st century is still waiting for y'all. Wake up!

On the other hand New England continues to support equality for all. The people of Maine rejected a proposition that would remove protections for LGBT peoplez. Well done Maine and New England!

    vWayner reaches 30,000

Congratulations to vWayner.com for reaching the 30,000 visitor milestone. Well done!

    Only in Michigan...

Only in Michigan an 18yo high school student, (still in high school) gets elected as Mayor of an 8,000+ provincial town they forgot to shut down...

The mayor will be available after 2pm because he has to be in school before that!

Mad TV is turning into Sad TV

Once upon a time about 50% or more of Mad TV skits were actually funny. After watching a few episodes of the latest batch of Mad TV I sometimes had a hard time finding even one funny skit per episode. Bobby Lee is the only funny character there, since Michael McDonalds has cut back on his popular characters. They have even resorted to showing funny websites (that is such a 1999 thing to do!). At least they fleshed out the Duralog joke. They get bonus points for that ;-)

    Election Day and News channels

Five news channels, and election day. You randomly zoom through them and guess what? They all show commercials or random fluff or simply crapola. But fear not. In between the commercials, fluff and crapola they sneak in some election coverage to fill in the gaps ;-)

Things are not much different with the local news, despite this being an election of significance in California. Half a dozen different local news are running in parallel and guess what? It's just commercials, crap, dogs and cats sneazing, the weatherman joking with the anchor, preview of the preview of the next story, and brief election coverage to fill in the gaps.

While this is not a political blog, here are some races of national interest:
  • Arnold's props in CA
  • Virginia governator race
  • Jersey governator: Corsine -vs- Forester
  • New York mayor: Bloomberg -vs- Ferrar
  • Rednecks attempting and probably winning a constitutional ammendment on same-sex marriage in Tx

  • Star Wars mania Episode III

In its first week on sale Star Wars Episode III DVDs (wide or full) and video games brought in over 210 million in sales. And this is only the beginning of the holiday shopping season!

Network TV slowly gets the message

Missed last night's brand new episode of your favorite TV show? The TV industry is slowly catching up with the viewers and the technology: CBS will offer some of its shows On Demand (Comcast) for 99c but with commercials, just a few hours after their original airing. NBC (along with SciFi and Bravo) will offer some of their shows On Demand (Direct TV) for a fee but no commercials. It looks like it only took the TV industry 200 months to react to the downloads, VCRs, DVRs, PVRs and DVD recorders :P

    First gay kiss!

The first gay kiss on Brazilian TV was so highly anticipated that it got higher ratings than the soccer world cup! But the TV station apparently chickened out, so no kiss :-(
